DIY Epoxy Flooring:
Can You Tackle Your Garage Project Alone?
Assessing Your Skills: Are You Ready to Epoxy?
It’s all in the prep
The truth is, laying epoxy is fairly easy. You probably could DIY it. BUT, just laying epoxy down on a garage floor that you power or acid washed is going to have all sorts of problems. That’s why we know that it’s all in the preparation. 80% of our time on a garage floor is spent doing prep. Checkout the list below to see how much it would cost to do a standard 2 car garage with the right equipment.
Floor Grinding
The main difference between cousin Jimmy’s Tank Top Crew and STL Coatings is in the floor grinder. We use a diamond tooling that you can’t rent. This ensures the floor is rough and porous so the epoxy can adhere to you garage floor. For Life.
Think about spilling paint on a smooth surface, it’s just going to peel right off, but not with a rough, porous adhesion. That will stay for life.
If there is any shine left on the floor, it’s not ready!
DIY Equipment Rental
To DIY your garage with epoxy, here’s a list of the necessary equipment and associated costs for an xx sq ft garage:
Floor Grinder: This is the most important piece, most rentals are about $800 per day.
Diamond Tooling: Needed for the grinder; these cannot be rented and must be purchased.
Cost: Approximately $1,000.
HEPA Vacuum: Critical for safely removing harmful silica dust produced during grinding.
Cost: $150 for rental.
Power Requirements: The grinder needs a 50 amp circuit, which standard household outlets don’t support.
Cost: Approximately $200 for generator rental.
Weight Considerations: Rental grinders can weigh about 1100 pounds, posing additional challenges for handling and transport.
Bottom Coat: $50
Flake: $5
Top Coat: $50
